The Queen was born on 21 April 1926 at 2:40 am at 17 Bruton Street in Mayfair, London. She was the first child of the Duke and Duchess of York, who later became King George VI and Queen Elizabeth. At the time, she was third in line to the throne, after Edward, Prince of Wales (later King Edward VIII), and her father, the Duke of York. However, it was not expected that her father would become king and she would become queen. On Wednesday, February 6, 1952, Princess Elizabeth received news of her father’s death and her own accession to the throne while she was in a remote part of Kenya. The journey had to be cut short and the young princess flew back to Britain as queen. At the airport, she was greeted by Prime Minister Winston Churchill. The coronation took place on 2 June 1953 at Westminster Abbey. When Her Majesty ascended the throne at the age of just 25, her life changed overnight from that of a young wife of a naval officer and mother to that of a busy head of state. She became known for her sense of duty and dedication to a life of service, and was an important figurehead for the United Kingdom and the Commonwealth, both in times of crisis and celebration. The Queen reigned longer than any other monarch in British history and became a globally admired and respected figure. For over 70 years, Her Majesty was a dedicated leader of the Commonwealth, connecting more than two billion people worldwide. The Queen, beloved by her people, died peacefully in Balmoral on 8 September 2022.
